Hubungan status gizi, asupan energi, dan makronutrien dengan siklus menstruasi pada atlet pencak silat remaja: studi potong lintang

Abstract

Background: Menstrual cycle irregularities are common among female athletes. A previous study reported polymenorrhea in 31.8% and oligomenorrhea in 50.0% of martial arts athletes. Nutritional status and dietary intake may be associated with menstrual cycle regularity. However, studies examining these associations among Indonesian pencak silat athletes remain limited.

Objectives: To determine the associations between nutritional status, energy intake, and macronutrient intake with the menstrual cycle among adolescent pencak silat athletes.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Surabaya, Indonesia, and included 81 respondents recruited using snowball sampling. Nutritional status was assessed using body mass index (BMI), energy and macronutrient intakes using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), and menstrual cycles using a menstrual cycle questionnaire. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis.

Results: Nutritional status (p = 0.016), energy intake (p < 0.001), carbohydrate intake (p < 0.001), protein intake (p = 0.002), and fat intake (p = 0.010) were significantly associated with the menstrual cycles. Nutritional status showed the strongest association with irregular menstrual cycles (OR = 6.275; 95% CI: 1.11–35.47).

Conclusion: Nutritional status, energy intake, and macronutrient intake were significantly associated with the menstrual cycle in adolescent pencak silat athletes.
